"The Bowery Bunch"
In 1981, a recreational women’s softball team lost a teammate when she was tragically killed in a car accident. Gloria Doody was 25 when she died and left behind a 5-year-old son, Christopher.
Her teammates, most being mothers themselves, couldn't stand to think about Christopher growing up without his mother and wanted to help in the one way they knew how -- softball.
That summer, The Bowery Bunch held a softball tournament. 12 teams competed for the championship and $1,000 was raised to start a trust fund for Christopher.
The following year, teams wanted to play again and the Gloria Doody memorial softball tournament was born. Now, 35+ years later, under the name of Glory Be to Kids, Inc., more than $500,000 has been raised and donated to various local children's charities through multiple annual events.
We are united in the belief that there is no greater cause than that of a child. "Glory Be to Kids" strives to make a difference in the lives of children in need.
Began to honor the memory of one friend and to help one child, today, Glory Be to Kids is a celebration of ALL children, of community and of friendships.
By combining our love of children with our love of sports, funds are raised through various events.
Each year a different local children's charity is chosen as a recipient and all money raised is donated to them.
